CALDWELL, NJ — Making Scouting history in the local community, Caldwell’s first-ever Scouting America troop for girls has officially formed. Troop 846G opens a brand new chapter for young women in the West Essex area, providing them with the same leadership development, outdoor adventure, and character-building opportunities that scouting has long offered.
As part of Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America), Troop 846G allows girls ages 11 to 17 to participate in the traditional scouting program. Members of the new troop have the opportunity to camp, hike, learn vital life skills, participate in community service, and ultimately earn the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout.
“This has been something that we knew should come to the Caldwell area, making a great youth program available to even more young people,” said Mike McDonald, Scoutmaster of Troop 846G. “We are thrilled to have launched in March and continue to welcome founding members of this new troop.”
“Our goal is to create an environment where young women can challenge themselves, build lifelong friendships, and develop into the leaders of tomorrow. The enthusiasm we’ve already seen from our scouts has been incredible. And we have been fortunate to receive support from the community to help us get started.”
The troop has received financial support from Caldwell Rotary, Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex, and private donors.
Since getting started in March, the troop has been on camping trips, participated in a community service project, held weekly meetings to learn scout skills, and are currently preparing for a week of summer camp at Camp NoBeBoSco in Hardwick Township, NJ.
Troop 846G operates as a separate, all-girl troop, but shares a chartering organization with Caldwell’s long-standing Scouts BSA Troop 6. The founding leaders of Troop 846G come from extensive scouting backgrounds, having served as leaders in Cub Scout Pack 846 and on the Committee of Troop 6.
The troop is actively welcoming new members and adult volunteers. No prior scouting experience is necessary to join.
